Our commitment
PuzzleYYC is built so anyone in Calgary — regardless of ability, device, or assistive technology — can find a puzzle table, an event, a community group, or a way to volunteer. We target WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance across every page of this site.
What we do
- Keyboard navigation — every interactive element (nav, links, buttons, form fields) is reachable and operable using only the keyboard. A visible focus ring follows your cursor.
- Screen readers — semantic HTML, descriptive link text, alt text on every image, and ARIA labels where landmarks aren't enough.
- Color contrast — body text meets 4.5:1 contrast against its background; large display text meets 3:1. We audit at every design change.
- Reduced motion — animations and scroll reveals respect the
prefers-reduced-motionsetting in your OS / browser. - Resizable text — text scales up to 200% without breaking layout, and our font sizes use a fluid
clamp()scale so things stay readable at any viewport. - Skip-to-content — keyboard users can jump past the navigation directly into page content.
- Sentence-case labels — buttons and nav use sentence case, not all-caps, for easier scanning.

- Government of Canada Accessibility Strategy principles
What we're still working on
PuzzleYYC is built in the open by volunteers. We know there's more to do:
- Continuous re-audits as we add public event pages and refactor toward shared components.
- Improved alt text where current placeholders are generic.
- Captions and transcripts for any future video content.
- An accessibility audit by an independent third party before the public launch weekend.

- Include the URL, the browser + assistive tech you're using, and what didn't work.
- We aim to acknowledge within 2 business days and ship a fix or workaround within 14 days.
Technical specifics
Pages are static HTML rendered by Astro, served from Cloudflare Pages. No JavaScript is required to read the content — interactivity (form submission, dynamic nav behaviour) is layered on top. We test with NVDA, VoiceOver (macOS + iOS), keyboard-only navigation, and Chrome / Safari / Firefox at multiple viewport sizes.
